Veteran's Day is Thursday.  I want you to think about what it means to be a Vet and what it means to celebrate this holiday- by using the questions below to start a discussion.  Answer as many of the questions as you can OR respond to someone else's blog post from this week instead.

  • Why do some choose a career in the military?
  • Why is it important to recognize their service?
  • Compare and Contrast what it would be like to be a soldier today vs one in the American Revolution or even the Civil War

  1. Some choose to be in the military because its there only choice. Maybe there life at home isn't good or they just need something to do. Others I think do it because they want to serve their country and protect it and the feel by joining the military their doing exactly that. Recognizing veterans is extremely important because they are all important to us even though we don't always realize it. Without all those people fighting for we wouldn't be able to do the things we like most. I think to be a soldier today and a soldier in the civil war be completely different. To be a soldier today you would have to worry more about the enemy and in the civil war times i think you would have to worry more about starvation and becoming sick.

  2. some people choose to be in the military to fight for our country. it is important to recognize their service because they are fighting for our country and risking their lives for us. to be a soldier back in the civil war or american revolution would be way different because if they got shot or injured they would most likely die because they don't have the technology we have today. one thing that is the same is we have similar weapons. they are very similiar now and when they were back in the civil war.

  3. In my opinion some people choose to be in the military because they want to serve our country even though they are risking their lives. These people have pride in their country and want to protect their families. Recognizing their service is important because some people die serving our country and protecting us. They are the protectors of democracy and they deserve to be known. I think that a soldier from the American revolution or Civil war would have a harder time because of the technology. People would have no bullet proof vests or the technology to heal wounds like we do today. But because of the advance in weapon technology people can die easier. So that fact evens out the number of deaths.

  4. I think that some choose a career in military to help the u.s. and the world. They help so much that is why it is important to recognize their service. Very tough harder than it was because their are more advanced weapon.

  5. 1. I think some choose to be in the military to keep their families and country safe.
    2. It is very important to recognize their service because it’s dangerous what they are doing and some of the men and women who do that don’t come back.
    3. Being a soldier today vs. being a person in the American Revolution? I would pick a soldier today because we have more advanced weapons and armor and we are more protected.

  6. I think people choose a career in the military because they want to help keep our county free. Some do it because they are physically strong and they think it's the best way to use their ability.

  7. You choose a career in the service in my bellive to serve your country, to give back to your country for what the united states has given you as a person. People have gave their lifes to protect this country so each indivdual in this country could be a free indivadual and have their rights that they deservie. It is importand to honor theese veterns because they have risked their lifes to serve our country and protect our freedom and what is right in our minds. The main difference between the time of the civil war and is that their are more weapons, bigger weapons, MORE DANGEROUS weapons then there was back then there is also more things to protect the soilders and more surgical knolage then there was in the time of the civil war to were if your were shoot in the leg in the civil war you could die now all you do is go to the hospitol and they sergically remove the bullet shardes from your leg

  9. Some people join the military for a sense of self-fullfillment or just because it sounds interesting. Everyone has their own reason and everyones reason is different. Some people have had a hard life and have nothing to go back to. Others Think that life is a videogame and nothing bad can actually happen. These people are wrong and usually don't make it back. There's even others who just want to serve their country and this is there way of doing that. Everyone has had a different life and differents experiences that influence their choices.

  10. Some people enter the Military to serve our country and help protect us fight for freedom and things like that. It's important to recognize their services because they fight for us, and that's really awesome, and they're our heroes.
In the American revolution it would be harder due to the weapons and the sizes of the army, compared to today with advanced weaponry and more people

  11. For me Vetrans day means not a whole lot but enough. My dad fought in Desert Storm for three years (befor I was born). He almost did die in the war he crash landed. I felt sad when i heard the letter of the nurse that had to see another fellow nurse die. I wish there was no wars.

  12. I am not sure why people choose to fight and be in the military but I think they do so because they think they owe their country and should stand up for it. I happy that some people in this world have thoughts like this that I myself could not match. I recognize their services because they keep us safe, they give us the time to sit at home in our soft sofas and watch TV while they fight. Being a soldier today is more different then being a soldier back then because today we aren't really worried about weapons or food or disease but rather about how to fight and win. I also wanted to say thank you to every vet out their who has given me comfort and has suffered pain.Thanks.

  13. 1. I think that some people choose a career in military because they want to portect our country and keep their friends and family free. In some families it is a tridition for the men to join the army.
    2. It is important to honor those in the military because without them we would not be free. Also, we protect other countries and without us they would be destroyed.
    Any comments?

  14. 1) Peole choose to be in military so they can serve their country. Also because they dont know what to do next after high school or college and they go to the army. And like Scout said, sometimes it's thier only choice, like, they have nothing to do.
    2) we should recognize what they do because without our soldiers, we'd be treated badly and we'd have nothing because we didnt fight for anything.
    3) Today's soldiers are diffrent because we have more weapons than they did during the American Revolution and the Civil war, and now we are fighting with diffrent countries and over diffrent issues.
I think now you have more of a choice and we have WAY more soldiers than we did a long time ago.

  15. I think some people choose to be in the Military because they want to honor their family or their country. They want to help fight world peace and make sure everythings okay no matter what happens to them or even their friends & family.
It's important to recognize their service because they do so much for our country. Keeping us safe, and they ask for so little in return. It's important because they want us to make sure we don't need to worry about what's going on when they have it covered. Being a soldier today, I think you have more voice in what you want to do with your free time. I think they have more respect to what's happening then back in the Civil War. Even though both were fighting for their country. I think being in the Civil War there was so much more going on where it was to the point they needed anyone they could get and things were more dangerous because they didn't have the weapon power that we have today. Also being a Soldier today, you seem to get more respect, like when people see you. They go, wow... You faught for me country! That's awesome(:

  16. I think that some people choose a career in the military because they want to serve their country and fight for their own and every one else's saftey. Also, maybe they haven't found a certain thing that they want to focus on in college, so they go fight for their country. It is important to recognize their service because they are all risking their lives and saftey for the country's saftey. I believe that today if you were to join the military today you would need to be more concerned on not getting shot or ambushed by your memory. But back then people in the military would have to worry about dieing from germs and food poisoning and they would probably want to be paid for it.

  17. I guess that some people join the military because they want to prove that they did something good in their life or they just want a change. others do it because they love nothing other than their country and their life is going nowhere.

  18. I agree with wendy, she makes a good point saying that the military officials don't have to worry about dying about germs and such. They have to worry about getting shot and killed whixh isn't always the best feeling when other people are trying to kill you.

  19. Some may choose to serve in the military bacause there eduction gets payed for. It's very important to recongize their service because they are fighting for our country and they deserve total respect for what they've done.
Being a soldier now compared to back then in the civil war is a big difference. Now a days we have way more technology, that is very useful. So fighting in the civil war was a lot harder to survive. Thanks to thoughs who did and didn't.

  20. In my opinion some people choose to be in the military because they might feel that they have to ngive back to their country. It is important to recognize their service because they have fought in a war. if I were to join in the military today we would get so many things to keep us alive but back then Americans fought so they could part from England.

  21. I think people go into the military because they want to protect their country and family. Also some people want to go into the military because they want to do something important with their life. It's important to recognize their service because what they are doing for us is very dangerous and many people have died serving our country and keeping us safe. The military is different because today you have to worry about not getting shot while back then there were more things to worry about, like starvation or sicknesses. Also today we have more advanced and accurate weapons compared to the Revolutionary War or Civil War. The military is the same in the fact that people went, and still go, into the military because they want to serve thier counrty.

  22. Some choose to be in the military to support their country and risk their lives for us to be free. If no one did that then we might be ruled by another country and kept as slaves. It is important to reconize their service because they have done so much in history that have made the world a better place. Veterans definatly deserve at least a day because they care not just about themselves but for this whole entire country. Plus it takes alot of skill to stay alive while serving and make it home safely...

  23. Some choose to fight for our country because they love it. And some do it because they have to. it is important to recognize their service because they put their life on the life so we can live ours. i think it would be harder to be in the military in the older times because they didnt have all the technology we do and there guns werent as good as ours.

  24. I think people choose to join the military to support, and fight for our country. It's important to recognize their service, because those who join the military are the brave and strong ones that step up for our country, and they risk their lives to protect the people of our country.
