Mark Twain has been noted as a darn funny writer.  Give me a couple examples from Tom Sawyer that shows his sense of humor!

At least 2 sentences, but go for it- write more!

As always blog  by Friday morning!

  1. I can agree that Mark Twain is a funny writer; he expresses his writing by recreating his childhood memories substituting himself as Tom Sawyer. I think the only reason why it is funny is because how Mark lived back then and how he puts his story in the book. For example, his situation with Becky Thatcher. I honestly thought it was really funny, because your a twelve year old boy telling a girl you love her. When at first you don't even know what love is. Then getting engaged. At TWELVE YEARS OLD. Ridiculous. But its funny. And also the warts thing. Mark paints a picture about getting rid of warts with a dead black cat. or sticking your fingers into a disgusting pond. Its gross but its also funny. Mark Twain is sooo creative. And I am really enjoying the book.

  2. some examples of his humer would be, the fact that his charactor is soooooo dramatic and makes a small issue into a big deal like when he hurt his toe and acted like he was dying. to me that was funny. And another part in the book i thought was funny is, how they were all in church and tom pulles out one of his ''treashures'' a bug , lets it loose and then a stay dog comes in, finds the bug and starts playing with it....HAHAH LOL... and then time goes on and tom forgets about the bug and accedentally sits in it and it bites his butt and then everyone is diracted except a few peopleand then the bug bites the stray dg and the dog goes crazy and that part is just sooooo funny to me.

  3. I though it was funny how he made Tom SO dramatic. Also, I thought it was funny how he impresses girl by doing weird this like balancing a straw on his nose or doing gymnastics.

  4. Mark Twain shows alot of humor so ar throughout the book. (Up to chapter 30 ;P) I don't know if you want page numbers but in one scene Becky and Tom get ingaged and its extremly dramatic and hilarious. In another Tom gets his Bible but thinks the first two apostles of Jesus are David and Galiath (Sooo not true!!) Which made me laugh. And one of my fave scenes is the church scene where the poodle sat down on the beetle and ran around the church howling in pain. XD can someone let a poodle and a pinch bug into my church meetings?!?! Just kidding! Well i don't want to spoil future scenes so that all I'm gonna write.

  5. He shows huck making becky pleed with him to see the picture. He tricks the kids into thinking that white washing the fence was a great pride. The way he writes about tom and his love life and the way he trys to get girls to like makes me LOL....... :-) salima kariuki

  6. Generally, Mark Twains characters are just funny. Not nessecarily laugh out loud funny, but the kind of funny that makes you think. I remember we read in the "Tom, Huck, and Friends" article that he was famous for that sort of thing. For example, Tom's aunt in the book. At first you laugh at the things she says to scold Tom, and how outrageous she is when she's punishing him. But then you think, "Hey, my mom's like that!" In other words, it's funny because it's true. You can relate to it. Other than that, Tom's dramatic personality is really quite funny. (Maybe that's me relating to it...)

    1. I totally agree! I can relate to getting bored in Church, and my mom never actually had to punish me so I would be more like Becky or Sid. (Scrathc that I AM NOT like Sid) He's so dramatic you can't help but giggle and then think about how you used to do that or whatever.

  7. Some things that make Mark Twains books funny are things like the whitewashing scene where he convinces its to hard for everyone else to do it. Also when he pretended like he didn't want Becky to see what he made but she begged to see it.

  8. the funniest scenes that i have read from tom sawyer so far would have to be the church scene(as almost if not everybody said) and the the chapter that we just read today. it was number 12 or maybe 11. i forgot(obviously) but those were really funny scenes. i think that the only reason that it is funny for younger readers of mark twain is that it is so ridiculous. giving your cat liquid pain killer? or giving a girl that you love a door knob. not to mention he is twelve and is sure that he in head over heels in love? its funny because of the ridiculousness of it all.

  9. I think Mark Twain really shows his sense of humor is the scene about the cat drinking the meedicine. it wass really funny how Mark Twain explained how the cat acted. I also liked the scene when he gave Becky Thatcher a knob & asked her to marry him. I thought that was funny because no one would do that now-a-days so I think thats what made it so funny.

  10. I think an example of when mark twain showed his sense of humor was when he tries to make tom and the other kids sound really dramatic and he relates his book to childhood memories that some kids now can relate to.

  11. I think its funny how durring church he explained what the dog was doing when it came to church and how no one was really paying atention. i also thought that when the cat was basicly drugged it was pretty funny. I could just imagine my friends cat doing that cuz she is so curious ;)

  12. I think how over dramatic Tom is as a character is really funny. It's funny to read about how Tom is so over dramatic! Some scenes that makes me laugh was when he told Becky that he loved her and telling her the idea of that she has to get engaged to him. Even though he is only 12 YEARS OLD! Giving pain medicine to Peter the cat and the white washing scene were pretty funny also! And most importantly what makes Tom funny is his personality and cleverness that gets him into trouble all the time. I'm really enjoying the book! :)

  13. Mark twain shows his humor in his stories by telling stories that people can relate to. Such as when Tom is trying to get Becky to like him he starts to show off around her and do stupid stuff to try to make him look awesome.

  14. I think mark twain shows his creative sense of humor when the cat OD's on pain killers. He describes the scene very well. It's also funny when he describes the superstitions they have.

  16. One of the examples of Mark Twains's humor is when Tom feeds the cat, Peter, painkillers. Who else would think of that?! That scene made me laugh as well as several others, therfore depicts humor.

  17. In the short time that we have been reading this book there have been tons of humor. One example is when after running away tom, joe, and huck all agreed to never steal again on any pirate adventures. this type of irony shows how ignorant tom and his buddies were. Another example is when tom fed the cat painkillers. How i pictured the cat bouncing off the wall was hilarious and reminds me of my dog after eating anything.

  18. From what we have read so far i think the sence with the most humor is when tom gives the cat peter pain killers and the cat is "high" or druged. that happend to my dog when she came back from the vet but after a while she collapesd on tho the floor. another time mark twain shows humor is when tom is "engaged" to becky.

    1. Mark twain is mostly funny in his book because he is writing thing he has done though his life. And if nothing of what he says in his books was not true I would not think his book would be funny. Yes I guess he has a good humor. -Oscar Santos-
